If I'm broiling something in the oven, do I have to keep the door open?

My mom ALWAYS kept the oven door opened when broiling, and insists I do the same.... But in all the years I've been watching cooking shows and reading recipes, I have never heard or seen this being done outside my mother's house! Please settle this once and for all :) thanks.
